Filmed-in-New England Blockbuster “Shutter Island” Delays Release

Yeah, we’re all about indie cinema, but sometimes you have to  stretch your comfort zone and give in to those big budget Hollywood thrillers. We’re all guilty of it. And a little guilt feels good.

Leonardo DiCaprio is still one of the busiest dudes in Hollywood (check out his production schedule in IMDb, for example), and his pairing with Scorsese seems to be a winning one. His new insane-asylum horror/mood piece, Shutter Island, due for release this fall, has been postponed until February due to Paramount’s lack of cash flow; apparently execs would have needed to pony up 5-digit figures to support the film’s Oscar contention at the 2010 awards next March. Adapted from Dennis Lehane’s novel and filmed on creepy locations in Maine and Massachusetts — including Medfield’s abandoned State Hospital — SI features a cast as heavy as its grizzly subject matter, including Patricia Clarkson, Ben Kinglsey, and Max Von Sydow.

I doubt Shutter Island would make it to that independent theater the LFC is dreaming about for Lowell, but we can always plan a covert trip to the local googleplex, can’t we?
