Pollard Memorial Library in Lowell continues its independent film night this Thursday with Jaffa, an emotional drama set in the Arabic-Jewish seaside city for which the film is named. For Mali and Toufik, life in Jaffa has been made oppressive by their forbidden love of one another and their two families, whose traditions and complicated relationships are destined to tear everyone apart. Directed by Keren Yedaya, Jaffa was given a special screening at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival (not in competition).
We highly recommend Pollard Library’s monthly indie film series, especially because of their licensing partnership with Film Movement. For lovers of foreign film, Film Movement is your ideal as it features a membership component for both individuals and institutions that allows you to enjoy a different award-winning independent and foreign film every month for a reasonable fee. These are incredible, acclaimed films that for the most part rarely make it past film festivals and into the theaters due to their smaller budgets and foreign flare. For those that do make it to wide release, a membership with Film Movement allows you to preview (and own) the film before its theatrical release. What a great concept.
