Lowell audiences came out in full support of "Who Killed Chea Vichea?" on April 19, 2011

We’ve screened almost 80 films here in Lowell since founding the Lowell Film Collaborative two and a half years ago. We are in full agreement that this past Tuesday’s (April 19) screening of Who Killed Chea Vichea? was our most successful screening yet, but not in terms of numbers (though the event was standing room only), but in terms of partnership and community outreach. Connecting to Lowell’s immense Cambodian population is something we have wanted to do for so long now. We give our humble thanks to Lowell National Historical Park and to those who brought audience to this event, including the film’s producer and our special guest for the evening, Rich Garella, whose compassion and remarkable dedication to his film is something we’re in awe of.

The risks involved in making this film were phenomenally great, and ones Rich and director Bradley Cox embraced. For anyone who is not aware, Who Killed Chea Vichea? captured first-hand the brutal killing of Cambodian union leader Chea Vichea, and uncovered a web of lies and conspiracy within the Cambodian government. For these reasons, the film has been banned in Cambodia, the place that it MOST needs to be seen.

If you are reading this, we hope you will consider contributing to Loud Mouth Films’ mission of producing Khmer language copies of the film to physically bring to the country for viewing by its citizens. This appeal was successfully made by the makers of the renowned Oscar-winning film The Cove, which was already fortunate enough to have strong financial support from the beginning. But public support was still needed, and it was eventually received.

It’s important for us as viewers to not only support a film through our attendance and praise, but through the literal act of DONATING. If you were present at Tuesday’s event and received a pledge envelope, please follow through on your desire to give by CLICKING HERE to make a donation towards the Chea Vichea Film Project. If you were not present at our screening and wish to donate, please do so through the link above. And if  you wish to see the film before contributing, we encourage you to purchase your own copy, an additional way you can give back and help the efforts to bring the film to a wider audience.

A full house in Lowell for "Who Killed Chea Vichea?" on April 19, 2011

Our sincere thanks once again to Rich Garella and Bradley Cox for risking so much in the making of this documentary. We will keep you posted on future news on Who Killed Chea Vichea?, including any local screenings that take place. Special thanks to our dear friend and supporter Nancye Tuttle, who blogged about the event (“A Passionate Cause”) on her site, Nancye’s World.

Finally, thank you all, our audience, for your continuing support of our film events in Lowell. We sincerely couldn’t do it without you. We were so moved by seeing so many come out this past Tuesday — it makes all our hard work so worth it!
