Indie Film Spotlight: Ewan McGregor sparkles in “Beginners,” screening at Martha’s Vineyard June 18

BEGINNERS
Saturday, June 18 @ 7PM
The Capawock Theatre
43 Main Street, Vineyard Haven

Focus Features has scored another big one with Beginnners, a unique father-son indie film starring Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer and a heart-pleasing little Jack Russell named “Cosmo.” You just can’t go wrong with that trilogy. Though the film is currently screening in the Boston area at the Kendall Square Cinema, we thought we’d focus on special screening of Beginners taking place on Vineyard Haven this Saturday presented by the good folks at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival (MVFF) — the event is free for members of the MVFF and $9 for non-members. Visit the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival and get familiar with all the great year-round film programming they produce, especially Cinema Circus, their awesome offerings for kids and families. When visiting the Vineyard this summer, know for sure that you’ll have great film waiting!

About Beginners [taken from the official site]:

Plummer & McGregor are father and son in "Beginners"

Beginners imaginatively explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver (McGregor). Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna (Mélanie Laurent) only months after his father Hal Fields (Plummer) has passed away. This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father, who, following the death of his wife of 45 years, came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life – which included a younger boyfriend, Andy (Goran Visnjic). The upheavals of Hal’s new honesty, by turns funny and moving, brought father and son closer than they’d ever been able to be. Now Oliver endeavors to love Anna with all the bravery, humor, and hope that his father taught him. At once deeply personal and universal, Beginners was inspired by director Mike Mills’ own father and is meant in turn to inspire everyone weighing their chances and choices in life and love.

So far, the film is Certified Fresh and has scored Oscar buzz for Plummer. Be sure to visit Beginners on the web (linked above) and save time to peruse the site – it’s fantastic and interactive, full of interviews and clips and actually a pleasure to navigate.

Happy movie-watching, friends, and be sure your calendar is marked for next Wednesday, June 22, for our Outdoor Bike-In Film Event at Lowell’s Shedd Park Pavilion — hope we see you there!
