Our 2011 Film & the Arts Series continues in September after a brief summer hiatus! We’re coming back with a bang with the acclaimed AND award-winning independent film Earthwork starring Academy Award nominee John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone). When we first saw this great film at the 2010 Maine International Film Festival, we couldn’t wait to bring it to Lowell. Thankfully, our good friends at Shadow Distribution picked up the film and gave us their blessing to host a community screening, even while Earthwork makes its theatrical debut. Our BIG thanks goes to Shadow for their partnership and ongoing support of our local film mission!

Writer, producer, director Chris Ordal makes his debut with this powerful, thoughtful film that tells the true story of crop artist Stan Herd (played by Hawkes), a self-proclaimed rebel and quiet soul who takes on a public art project in New York City on land owned by Donald Trump. Yes, Stan Herd the man, and the artist, DOES exist. And after viewing the film, you’ll want to learn more about his artistry and passion — creating artwork literally from the earth and ON the earth — to be viewed from the sky, from the natural objects we often take for granted.

We hope you’ll join us as we present this film at the Art Gallery at Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union. We worked closely with Jeanne D’Arc when they opened their doors to us for our November 2010 screening of Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision, the kickoff film of our Film & the Arts Series. We’re so grateful that they’ve embraced our desire to showcase a film in their intimate gallery space, which is fully equipped with a projection and sound system. Thank you, friends!

Seating for this event is limited to only 45 so we suggest you arrive early. Our hosts will provide wine, cheese, and other refreshments so we can all enjoy social time before the show so bring friends, family and neighbors and enjoy a truly remarkable film that celebrates artistry and compassion.
