Waterville, Maine – if you consider yourself a true film fan, that’s where you should be headed this weekend, because Waterville is the home of the 12th annual Maine International Film Festival. Things kicked off last night and will continue for a whopping 10 days until Sunday, July 19. During those 10 days, more than 100 films will be screened, representing the best of American independent and international cinema.
The festival also spotlights some of Maine and New England’s most exciting and innovative filmmakers, and as a special treat for the youngsters, MIFF’s Fireflies Program offers children’s films from around the world as well as workshops and related arts events for children and teens.
For those who aren’t so eager to make the 2+ hour haul to Waterville, the Portsmouth Music Hall will be getting in on the action next weekend as they screen 8 different films from Friday night until Sunday night. The Music Hall is a wonderful venue for film, and it’s exciting to hear that they are getting in on the action this year.
The LFC has our own festival to attend next weekend – the Fantasia Fest in Montreal. For those of you who are into edgier films, we will attempt to provide via this blog a daily update of the “fringe” films we see over the weekend (we are signed up for a total of 8 at the moment, including two midnight screenings).
