If you’ve convinced yourself there are no indie film viewing opportunities in Lowell and the surrounding area, you just aren’t looking hard enough. In addition to the events hosted by the Lowell Film Collaborative, several libraries in our vicinity offer regular free film events.
On the second Thursday of each month, the Pollard Library right here in Lowell, in collaboration with Film Movement, Inc., hosts Independent Film Night.
On Thursday, January 14, @ 6:30 PM, the library will screen Mine, a documentary that follows New Orleans residents as they attempt the daunting task of trying to reunite with families all over the country who have adopted the pets they lost during Hurricane Katrina. This compelling meditation on race, class and the power of compassion examines how we treat animals as an extension of how we view and treat each other. With their multiple film series – Cinema Cabaret, Family Film, and World Cinema, to be specific – the Nashua Public Library over the border in New Hampshire spoon feeds us with film opp’s on a regular basis. Some upcoming screenings include the surprise indie hit (500) Days of Summer this Friday, January, 15 @ 7 PM, Quentin Tarantino’s brilliant The Inglourious Basterds next Tuesday, January 19 @ 7 PM, and the moody sci-fi film Moon next Friday, Jan. 22 @ 7 PM. Check the NPL’s calendar for more info on these and other upcoming screenings.
And finally, our friends nextdoor at the Chelmsford Public Library host Cinema Night Out on the third Thursday of each month at 7 PM. This series screens foreign, cult, and independent films normally seen in art-house cinemas. Selections are announced via e-mail newsletter on the week of the screening.
