Fall 2010 – Spring 2011: Don’t miss Lowell’s “Film and the Arts” Series

The Lowell Film Collaborative enjoys celebrating the City of Lowell’s burgeoning creative community by bringing a variety of film genres to wide audiences. We’ve also relished screening our films at many of Lowell’s non-traditional venues, including art galleries, restaurants, and outdoor settings. The city’s lack of a bona fide independent theater hasn’t stopped us from bringing wonderful film to all of you, and we are so grateful for your support.

Starting this fall, the LFC is proud to partner with the Arts League of Lowell (ALL) to present an exciting series of films showcasing a variety of artistic mediums. As always, each film has been carefully curated and will be screened in a complementary venue. We’re putting the finishing touches on our schedule, so please check back to this page for updates on times, film selection, costs, and location. We hope to see you in the months ahead for the following film presentations:

MAYA LIN: A STRONG CLEAR VISION (1995)

Director Freida Lee Mock’s Academy Award-winning documentary film relives the public controversial origins of the renowned Vietnam Veterans Memorial and showcases a decade of work of its young creator, 21-year-old Yale architecture student Maya Lin. Beating out some of the most prestigious architecture firms from around the world, Lin’s proposal was selected from over 1,000 different designs, a giant victory for such a young and unknown artist. Today, Lin is a celebrated and successful architect, activist, and environmentalist, and is still creating inspirational places of reverence, utility, and retrospection. About our venue: The Art Gallery at Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union features a state-of-the-art digital projection and sound system which will enhance your enjoyment of our presentation. A variety of artist works are showcased in the gallery on a rotating basis in collaboration with the Arts League of Lowell. Seating for this event is LIMITED – admission is FREE (donations welcomed).

Academy Award winning filmmaker Pamela Tanner Boll follows the lives of five amazing women in the arts who have refused to give up their dream to create despite accusations that they can’t “do it all.” Through their inspirational stories, the film explores some of the most problematic intersections of our time: mothering and creativity, partnering and independence, economics and art. Free admission.

Be there at the exciting birth of today’s booming hip-hop movement! This dynamic burst of music, dance, and life features the beginnings of some of today’s most legendary hip-hop, rap, and contemporary visual artists, including: DJ’s Grand Master Flash and Grand Wizard Theodore; rappers Grand Master Caz & the Cold Crush Bros, Double Trouble, and Fantastic Freaks; and legendary subway artist LEE Quinones. A performance by UTEC’s own hip-hop dance troupe will round out the event! Suggested donation: $5
