Don’t miss the special Lowell premiere of Enemies of the People, the groundbreaking, award-winning documentary by Thet Sambath (director/producer) and Rob Lemkin (director/producer). A senior reporter with the Phnom Penh Post, Sambath is widely regarded as one of Cambodia’s best investigative reporters — his work producing this remarkable film is nothing short of miraculous. We are pleased to announce that Rob Lemkin will be our special guest at all the 7:10PM showings on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. To see all available show times, we recommend visiting Showcase Cinemas in Lowell.

Enemies of the People takes us inside the minds and hearts of the perpetrators of the Khmer Rouge massacres, in particular Nuon Chea (aka Brother Number Two), who after a 30-year silence finally confesses to Thet Sambath the reasons behind the brutality he unleashed on his people. These interviews are eerily timely, as the United Nations and the Cambodian government will commence their tribunal to try the senior leaders of the Khmer Rouge for international crimes. Brother Number Two’s trial is set to begin this year.

Directors Thet Sambath and Rob Lemkin.

Called “one of the most harrowing and compelling personal documentaries of our time,” Enemies of the People exposes for the first time the truth about the Killing Fields and the Khmer Rouge rule over Cambodia from the point of view of those who both gave the final orders and carried out the genocide of millions. This is unprecedented. More than simply an inquiry into Cambodia’s experience, the film is a profound meditation on the nature of good and evil, shedding light on the capacity of some people to do terrible things and of others to forgive them.

Winner of a dozen top documentary festival awards, including a Special Jury Prize this year at Sundance and the Grand Jury Award at the Full Frame Documentary Festival, Enemies of the People is riveting and captivating, and takes audiences inside the world of mass killing like never before. It is also a personal journey by Thet Sambath, who lost his parents and brother in the Killing Fields, but whose patience and discipline elicits unprecedented on-camera accounts by perpetrators at all levels of the Khmer Rouge hierarchy. Cinematically beautiful and painfully insightful, the film represents investigative journalism of the highest order.
