It looks like this coming Tuesday, March 6 is going to be another TWO-FER for the Lowell Film Collaborative! In addition to our 3rd Annual Irish Film Night with the Irish Cultural Committee, we’ll be partnering with Lowell’s renowned Revolving Museum for a night of amazing experimental film in honor of Lowell Women’s Week (March 4 – 12). At just under an hour, Lana Z Caplan’s Sospira (sigh of longing) captures the intimacy, fear, and excitement of self-exploration, travel, and life-change in one of the most beautiful parts of the world: The Amalfi Coast of Italy. We’re VERY excited to welcome director Lana Z Caplan for an in-person appearance and post-film Q&A — trust us, after seeing Sospira, you’ll want to learn as much as you can about Lana’s personal journey and what inspired her to create such a moving piece of cinema.
ABOUT THE FILM
In Lana Z Caplan’s breathtaking Sospira, nine women take a leap of faith and leave their cities, families, careers, friends and personal goals behind to follow love and fulfill their dreams while reinventing their lives along the Amalfi Coast of Italy. Stunning digital video and super8 footage weave together as the women’s voices carry the film, telling their stories of meeting lovers, the choices involved in moving to Italy, the expected and unexpected compromises, and the search for a comfortable balance. As the fantasy veneer of Mediterranean village life wears thin, and beauty recedes to inaccessibility, their own desires and senses of self are called into question, becoming mysterious even to themselves. Filmed entirely on location in Positano, Italy, Sospira had its World Premiere in 2011 at the Boston Center for the Arts and features a mesmerizing original score by Kevin Micka (aka Animal Hospital) and Chris Brokaw. (Film run time: 50 minutes)
We extend our sincere thanks to Diana Coluntino, Artistic Director of the Revolving Museum, for bringing Lana’s work to our attention and allowing us to help promote this special Lowell Women’s Week film event.
